Did you know that a degree in chemistry provides a strong foundation for a wide variety of exciting careers? Chemists who work for manufacturing companies analyze products as part of the quality control process. Those who toil in the medical field undertake toxicological studies that help doctors make decisions about treatment. Other chemists are heavily involved in the synthesis of new materials.

Some never step foot in a laboratory, and practice computational chemistry instead – using software models to analyze potential products prior to production. When they work for drug companies, they might winnow a large number of possible molecules and synthetic pathways down to just a few, and predict the properties of a new drug without it ever being manufactured in the laboratory.

If you are an aspiring chemist who finds these career opportunities fascinating, then a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from LTU might be the program for you. With a solid background in chemistry, you’ll be highly valued in industry – and not just by chemical companies. Chemists who start “at the bench” often move into other areas, such as marketing, sales and management.

While chemistry is one of the preferred majors for admission to medical or dental school, it is also excellent preparation for law school. Patent law, environmental law, and occupational health and safety law all require the background that only a technical degree like chemistry can provide.

Why LTU?

  • You’ll learn from faculty with exciting research programs, industry experience, and professional networks.
  • You’ll learn in small classes with faculty that engage students in active and collaborative learning activities and course-based research experiences.
  • You’ll be a name – not a number. You’ll be advised and mentored by a faculty member in your discipline.
  • You’ll join a tight-knit community of caring faculty, staff, and students with opportunities to join our many science-related student organizations, including our American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and American Chemical Society student chapters.
  • All of our chemistry degree programs are approved by the American Chemical Society, a professional organization that promotes excellence in chemistry education.

ACS-approved programs offer a broad-based and rigorous chemistry education that gives students intellectual, experimental, and communication skills to become effective scientific professionals.
