Lawrence Technological University’s Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Premedical Studies is designed for college graduates who are interested in pursuing a professional medical career but have taken few or none of the science courses needed for admission to a medical, dental, veterinary, pharmacy, or other allied health school. The first such program in Michigan, the Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Premedical Studies provides the specific, rigorous preparation in English, biology, chemistry, mathematics, and physics that medical schools require.

The Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Premedical Studies requires 45 credit hours of course work, but it is expected that many students will have completed some of the requirements in conjunction with their baccalaureate degrees. As many as 17 credits will be accepted for transfer, provided they were earned with a grade of B or better. Enrollment in the program begins in the summer term with two courses to be pursued in the evening followed by two full-time semesters in the fall and spring and a second part-time summer term. An alternative part-time plan of work, requiring only two lecture courses per term, extends the program by a semester. Since the MCAT is normally taken in the late summer or early fall of the year preceding medical school enrollment and since the content of the courses in the program is required to take the MCAT successfully, you will have a “gap year” between completing the program and enrolling in medical school. Students often use this time to intern, volunteer, or conduct research – activities that can strengthen you as a professional school candidate.

Quest
Extracurricular activities are an important part of a medical school application. As a result, the Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Premedical Studies curriculum has a built-in Quest project. Quest is Lawrence Tech’s experiential learning program that gives students real-world experience in a field of their choosing that goes beyond the requirements of their courses. Although there is no restriction on the nature of the project, it is assumed you will choose one in the sciences. Quest gives you the opportunity to further explore your areas of interest and career options.
