Focus Areas
Partnership for Michigan's Health claims that one in every ten jobs in the state is now directly related to healthcare. The U.S. Government is emphasizing electronic medical record systems in healthcare. Intel and GE are collaborating in the healthcare field for the development of healthcare IT and home health monitoring. Based on the recent trends, a significant growth in healthcare related technologies and systems is apparent. Healthcare Systems deal with designing and improving the safety, cost, quality and efficiency of healthcare processes and systems and transforming healthcare delivery systems from an ineffective, reactive, disease focused system to achieve a cost effective, proactive, health and wellness focused system. Industrial engineers play a significant role in healthcare systems. Over the years, they have helped healthcare facilities improve total quality management, scheduling and sequencing, and operational control, such as medical records and patient turnaround time in emergency rooms. With the ultimate goal being continuous process improvement, the research methodology looks at current workflow, identifies bottlenecks, and finally proposes solutions and recommendations, using a number of tools, such as modeling and simulation, problem solving, statistical analysis, operations research, and data mining. The Healthcare Systems concentration provides the student with sufficient knowledge and skills for modeling, analyzing, and designing healthcare systems. Students will have an option to graduate with a Healthcare Systems concentration by taking electives related on healthcare systems instead of general electives.
