Story to Novel: Changing Forms in Fiction

Story to Novel: Changing Forms in Fiction

CoAD and CoAS have collaborated for this Design x Technology lecture with Saint Mary's College of California professor and author of the novel The Son of Good Fortune, Lysley Tenorio.

Some fiction writers consider the short story a "training ground" for the longer form of the novel, a means of practicing craft and technique before moving on to a more expansive narrative. But other writers see the short story and the novel as two distinct forms, each requiring its own sets of demands, innovations, and artistic considerations. How do the principles inherent to the short form (economy, spareness, compression) converge with and diverge from those of the long (expansiveness, openness, sprawl)?

In this lecture, Lysley will discuss the relationship between the story and novel forms and their corresponding narratives in the context of his short story collection, MONSTRESS, and his novel, THE SON OF GOOD FORTUNE.
