Initial Appointments

A student’s first appointment with a clinician is an hour-long meeting to gather background information, explore the student’s current concerns, and work out a treatment plan. Services are tailored to best meet each student’s needs and goals. Students experiencing a crisis are encouraged to contact Clinical Counseling Services immediately for a brief meeting.

Eligibility

All students who are currently enrolled and registered for classes are eligible for free services.

Individual Counseling

Counseling involves meeting with a clinician for up to 45 minutes per session. Sessions can be weekly or at whatever frequency is decided upon by the student and clinician. These meetings focus on the student’s initial concerns and making progress toward their treatment goals. Counseling can be provided on both a short-term and long-term basis, depending upon the student’s needs.

Diagnostic Screening

Screening is provided for various psychological and cognitive concerns, such as anxiety, depression, attention, and learning. For more comprehensive evaluations for learning or psychological issues, the clinicians can refer students to private off-campus clinicians or psychology clinics. Payment arrangements are between the student and the outside psychological service.

Crisis Intervention

Clinical Counseling Services clinicians are available for crisis situations. When they are unavailable, the Dean of Students or Campus Safety are contacted.

Referral Services

At times, a referral to an off-campus provider is necessary. LTU Clinical Counseling Services clinicians will work with students to find a treatment provider who will best serve their needs. If students need medications or help managing their medications, referrals to local physicians can be made.

Educational Outreach

Clinical Counseling Services provides training and workshops for faculty and students on a variety of topics, including stress management and psychological and cognitive conditions, such as ADHD, Asperger’s Syndrome, mood disorders, behavioral dysfunction, learning disabilities, and conflict resolution. Three times a year as part of a national mental health program, Clinical Counseling Services conducts screenings on campus in the areas of depression, alcohol, and stress management.

Consultation

Lawrence Tech faculty, staff, and parents who have concerns about a student are encouraged to contact Clinical Counseling Services. The clinicians are available to listen and can help develop a plan to assist the student of concern. The clinicians follow confidentiality laws and cannot disclose whether a student is currently in treatment.

Clinical Counseling Services is located on the fourth floor of the A. Alfred Taubman Student Services Center (C405).
