Topic: Media Matters

Workshop Leader: Professor Jody Gaber

Description:

Students are immersed in media from the moment they wake up until they pry themselves from their devices to go to sleep, but they have limited awareness of the role media plays in their perception of themselves and the world around them. Topics of this workshop will include media usage, “Fake News”, ethics in media, and global citizenship. Humanities, psychology, social science, history, language, economics, and media instructors engage in Active and Collaborative Learning (ACL) activities to facilitate a deeper understanding of Media’s role in our perception of reality. Instructors will also learn creative ways to include media technology in their curriculum.

Topic: Design and Technology

Workshop Leader: Professor Lilian Crum

Description:

The Design and Technology workshop for K-12 teachers asks students to design a mobile application. Working in teams, students will bring a concept into fruition by creating a functional prototype. The workshop is broken down into segments that can be adapted to different levels and areas of focus, such as concept development, visual design, user experience (UX), user interface (UI), and implementation from a paper prototype to a digital prototype.

Topic: Active and Collaborative Pedagogies in STEM Classrooms

Workshop Leader: Dr. Andrew Gerhart

Description:

During the workshop, participants will be introduced to Active and Collaborative Learning (ACL) and Problem-based Learning (PBL) techniques which are proven as highly effective pedagogies to develop both content and process skills for students at any age-level.

Topic: Hands-on Science: Introduction to Forensic Science

Workshop Leaders: Professor LaVetta Appleby and Dr. Fauzia Siddiq

Description:

This workshop will introduce basic ideas of Forensic Science. The following concepts will be covered: Acid/Base Analysis, Blood analysis, Fingerprint, Shoe print analysis, Fiber Analysis, and DNA analysis. These topics will be explored via hands-on investigations.

Topic: Storytelling and Addressing Equity in the Classroom

Workshop Leader: Dr. Sibrina Collins

Description:

If you had the power to change a student, how would you do it? How can we use storytelling as an educational tool to address equity in the classroom? In this session, you will have the opportunity to discuss a 30-min LTU student documentary entitled, “Women Untold,” celebrating the important intellectual achievements of three women of color, namely Alice Augusta Ball, a chemist who developed the first treatment for leprosy in the early 20th Century; Dr. Jewel Plummer Cobb, a cancer researcher who later became a university president, and Dr. Evelyn Boyd Granville, a mathematician who completed calculations for three NASA space missions. We will have a brainstorming session on how you could use the film in your classroom. This film focuses on diverse topics such as History, Social Studies, Civil Rights and STEM.
