An introduction to literary theory. The course will explore grand narratives of the nineteenth century, the strucuralist turn of the twentieth, and postmodern debates about identity and culture. Readings by authors such as Kant, Hegel, Marx, Arnold, Nietzsche, Freud, Saussure, Benjamin, Beauvoir, Fanon, Foucault, Baudrillard, Derrida, Said, Gilbert and Gubar, Spivak, Greenblatt, Haraway, Gates, Hooks, and Butler.
